WINDOW GLOSSARY:

-
U-Value - indicates a window's resistance to heat loss. The lower the number, the more efficient the window is in reducing heating and cooling costs.

- SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) - measures how well a window blocks heat from the sun. The lower the number, the better the window is at blocking unwanted heat gain.

*The U-Value and the SHGC are the numbers to look for when purchasing energy efficient windows. Both numbers have to be equal or less than .30 to qualify for the 2010 tax credit.

- R-Value - measures a window's resistance to heat less or how well a material resists heat transfer. The higher the number, the better the insulating performance.

- VLT (Visible Light Transmission)-  Customization, the more visible light comes through.

- UV (UltraViolet) - guages the amount of UltraViolet light that is transmitted through a window. UV light can cause fading of interior furnishings. The lower the percentage, the better the window is at reducing fade.
